The rules
Don’t be an ass.
That’s gotten us pretty far. Below is the full version, spelled out.
Silicon Alley Sports works because of the culture. Culture, in my experience, does not happen by accident. It happens because the rules are clearly stated and everyone agrees to play by them.
We’ve had one major rule from the start. I wrote it. I say it at every event. If you’ve been around, you’ve heard it:
Don’t be an ass.
That’s the short version. Over the years it grew into five golden rules, the same five you’ll see across this site. Here they are in full.
The golden rules
Five, spelled out.

No assholes.
Do not be an ass. Treat everyone with respect.

Leave your ego at home.
In the car works too. Everyone here is special and is here for a reason.

Talk to anyone and everyone.
If you see someone standing alone for more than 10 seconds, go introduce yourself.

No one eats alone.
Sit at any table, with anyone, at any time.

Be present.
Commit. You have a ticket and others do not. Do not just take up space. Be a human, be nice and kind. We’ve got plenty of time in our lives for AI and technology. Focus on people today.
On the course and courts
Two more, for game time.
- Respect the player. No need to head-hunt on the course or the courts.
- Win with grace.
